LAN is working but computer cannot ping. A simple quest for the Jedi.
Hello all !
I have bizarre problem and I'm hoping some of you may shed some much needed light.
The Background: My OS is Windows Vista Home Premium SP 2. One day I installed a proxy application -- ProxyCap -- as a free 30-day trial. The application installed some Winsock provider .dlls. After the 30-day trial, I uninstalled
the application. Then the problems started.
Even though the proxy application was disabled, regular internet connections were completely normal and unaffected. It was only after uninstalling the application that I have problems.
The Problem:
The computer cannot connect any longer to any website using the browser. My LAN seems to be fully functional, implying a software setting problem. I say my LAN is functional since if I go to Control Panel --> Network and Sharing Center --> View Status, and look under the 'Activity' section, I see the connection sending
and receiving packets with no problem. If I go to Control Panel --> Network and Sharing Center --> View Status --> Diagnose, I receive the message: "Cannot communicate with DNS Server (xxx.xx.xxx.xxx) Network diagnostics pinged the remote host but did not receive a response."Indeed, if go to Start --> cmd, and ping my DNS server, I receive a General Failure for all 4 packets sent.
However, I am able to ping my localhost at 127.0.0.1
My settings:
My ipconfig /all output: http://pastebin.com/Ksn2k2jaDHCP is enabled. For Local Area Connection Properties --> Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) --> Properties, I have 'Obtain IP address automatically' and 'Obtain DNS Server address automatically' selected. The same goes for --> Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) --> Properties. The application Sysinternal autoruns --> Winsock Providers tab, tells me that I have the "Bonjour Namespace Provider" active as a WinSock2 registry entry; it is mdnsNSP.dll and published by Apple Inc. That was present before the proxy installation,
and it is for iTunes. Screenshot: http://i1300.photobucket.com/albums/ag86/applemeetworm/winsock_zpsb41ca872.jpg
What I've attempted:
I attempted to reset Winsock for Vista by going to Start --> cmd, and typing
netsh winsock reset and restarting the computer.I attempted to reset the TCP/IP stack by going to Start --> cmd, and typing
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt and restarting the computer. Restarting my router.Disabling and then enabling my LAN connection.
Thank you all for helping me with my problem. I would be happy to furnish more information as needed. Thanks for looking, and thanks offering up any solutions.
Cheers!
